Scrunchies: Bigger Is Better

Ciao, bellas! It's a beautiful fall day and cold weather is right around the corner. Unfortunately, I'm not ready to delve into fall fashion yet. My severe hatred towards fall disposes me to need a little extra time to adjust to the transition. After all, I have a feeling that this North Carolina weather will keep me in skirts for a little while longer.

Instead of concerning ourselves with over-stressful fall fashion, today we'll take a fun trip down accessory road and talk about my BIG new obsession ;) Okay, I already gave y'all multiple hints so I'll just come right out and say it- BIG SCRUNCHIES!!! I am in absolute love with the over-the-top fluffy silky funny-looking giant scrunchie trend. Actually, it's not really a trend at the moment-- but we can change that! Before you hate on scrunchies too quickly and say they're "basic" and "something a vsco girl would wear", let me take this chance to persuade you otherwise...

Giant Scrunchies Trend Analysis

So where did this trend come from and why am I suddenly obsessed with it? Well, let me tell you.

I am seriously obsessed with Dancing with the Stars. Like, seriously. OBSESSED. Anyways, my favorite star of the season, Olivia Jade, always wears the cutest sweat sets to dance rehearsal with -wait for it- giant scrunchies (and hair scarves but I kind of include that in the elaborate scrunchie species)! I had a couple of giant scrunchies from last Christmas and this really encouraged me to pull them out.

Anyways, fast forward a couple of weeks and now I've been to the mall several times and returned each time with a new array of giant scrunchies. Oops. So anyway, now it's too late to go back and I have to be seriously committed to giant scrunchies.

Overall I love giant scrunchies and I think they're a great way to spice up a lazy low ponytail or sloppy bun. If you like wearing these hairstyles, then a fun scrunchie may be a good investment for you! In the next section, I'll address a few ideas on how to style this cool new accessory!

How to Style Giant Scrunchies

I'll be straight up with y'all. There aren't many ways to giant scrunchies. Unfortunately, high ponytails just don't work with them. I've tried all the different ways to wear them and it pretty much just comes down to low ponytails and low messy buns. That's the sad reality of giant scrunchies. I like to wear mine in these styles and experiment with hair texture depending on my outfit's vibes. One thing to consider is whether you want to let it be loose with framing or more controlled with hair tucked behind the ear. Once again it all depends on the outfit vibes.

There are all different types of scrunchies and that's what makes the big ones unique. You could go with sheer, silk, fur, or lace. Beyond that, don't be afraid of a classic hair scarf. Yes, they are still in style and probably always will be.

One of the reasons I love giant scrunchies is because you can wear them casually with lounge sets or formally with a silk tank top. You can wear them at home on the couch or out to a concert. They are very versatile and extremely flashy.

This Week's Fit + Item of Choice

Today I will be combining "This Week's Fit" and "Item of Choice" into one giant section (get it? Because we're talking about giant scrunchies ;). Last Monday, I picked out this gorgeous hot pink fur scrunchie from Aerie by American Eagle. It's not the biggest but it's certainly very dramatic. I styled it with a purple gingham set from Pacsun for a Jonas Brothers concert. It was super fun to mix up my traditional concert style with a funky hair accessory.

All in all, don't hate on giant scrunchie because I will be trying my absolute hardest to bring them back into style. I'm hoping to post some scrunchie inspo and outfit ideas on my Instagram this week so follow @ciaobella._ for more content! Ciao!

Item of Choice:

Be honest: do you support bringing giant scrunchies into style?
