How to Use a Signature Color to Develop Your Personal Style

Ciao, bellas! A couple of years ago, I was watching a fashion-related YouTube video about how to help your style stand out. From that video, I learned one very important key to having a recognizable style: pick a signature color. Everyone wants to be recognized. When we walk into the room, we want people to automatically sense our presence with not only our personality but with our appearance as well. And while trends are great paths to follow, sometimes they can lead you to dress like everyone else. Trust me, no one wants that.

In the first half of today's blog post, I'm going to pose an argument for why signature colors are one of the best methods to create a personally unique style. The second half will focus solely on how you can reset your wardrobe to provide support for this color. Let's get into it!

Disclaimer! I don't mean to imply that everyone has to have a signature color. Some people don't like a single color enough to center their wardrobe around it and others feel more comfortable with a full pallete. Today's blog post is simply a guide for those who are interested in the concept...

This Week's Fit

Before we get started, here's a slightly reused outfit of the week. I thought it would be extra fun to try and recreate one of CiaoBella's most iconic outfits. So here's the 2022 twist! I kept almost everything the same but added a baby pink gingham headband to spice it up. Do you like the old or new edition more? Comment your answer below!

(PS. Can you guess what my signature color is? ;)

Easy and Impactful

What makes a signature color so stylistically strategic? Not only does having a signature color mean that a majority of your clothing items/accessories will match each other, but it also means that your outfits have a repeatable theme. When in doubt, you can swap out your pink sweater for a pink tank top or rotate your black and white tops to match your pink jewelry and shoes. Having a signature color means that more of the items in your closet will match each other. You'll always know that your pink pants match your pink earrings and your pink bracelet will match your pink headband. Easy peasy.

The other plus for signature colors is that they're impactful. Nothing makes a statement like a bright pink pair of pants with a matching bag. Similarly, you can't make a better impression than in an iconic purple party dress that resembles your day-to-day purple outfits. Sticking to one color makes you more recognizable to the people around you. It creates a brand image that will stick with you and (hopefully) reflect your personality. Now, that's hard to forget.

Adjusting Your Wardrobe to a Signature Color

Obviously, the wardrobe of someone with a signature color will contain lots of - well, lots of that specific color. You should be able to look through their closet and think "wow, this person really likes green" or "someone wears a lot of orange". The reasoning for this is pretty simple: to have a signature color, you'll need to wear A LOT of that color to the point that people think of that color/color palette. Keep an eye out for your color-wheel favorites when at the mall. Search the color on your favorite website. Buy a matching pair of shoes or invest in some colored jewelry. The more you wear this color in an impactful way, the more you'll be associated with it.

And for my second "obviously", you obviously can't wear every single clothing item in that color. You'll need to buy a good 50% of things in a different color so that you have items that your signature color will actually match. For example, I know light pink looks great with white so I invest in a lot of white tops and skirts. Similarly, I know almost any shade of pink is to die for with sky blue so I stay strong on my denim game. Find a few good fit and color combinations and look to repeat them.

Item of Choice

Back to the item of choice! Today I'll be sharing one of my personal favorites: Rolla's East Coast cord flare pants. These pants are the same ones from earlier in the blog post! They fit great and add a splash of color to anyone's wardrobe. If you want to start wearing a signature color but don't know how to make your first big splash, then these pants are it. A bit of an investment, but trust me they're worth it! ;)

After reading this blog post, do you think you'll adopt a signature color? If so, what color are you thinking of? See you next week! Ciao!
